Department of Botany was established in 1958. Department has made its vision to unravel the wondrous mysteries of the plant sciences to students. The strongholds of the department are promoting excellence in teaching methodologies, encouraging practical orientation in the core subject, development in the field study and equipping the students with research. Department is well equipped with Herbarium, Museum, Library and Laboratory. Department is very enthusiastic to offer rich learning experience to students. From Dr.Adilakshmi, the pioneering Head of the Department to the present Head of the Department Dr.N.Nagavardhanam all have striven to promote excellence in curricular & co-curricular activities. Students of certificate course are a group from different branches of II year degree. They were very much interested and enthusiastic to know about the therapeutic properties of plants and their products. Students were thrilled to know the processing of plant parts transforming into usable drugs during their visit to pharmacy center. Students’ involvement in learning is noteworthy as they presented the self prepared products at the time of evaluation.

2012 -13

  • Botany department organized Botanical tour for III BSc & II BSc BZC students to Visakhapatnam & Araku from 17th August to 20th August 2012.They visited Simhachalam hills,Kambala Konda,Indira Gandhi Zoological park, Beach on 18th & Borra caves, Tribal museum, Botanical garden on 19th August. Students enriched with this trip by studying & observe the plants & animals in their natural habitats.
  • III BZC students visited Mounika hand prints-Santhinagar, Denduluru, Horticulture department-Eluru, Kandrigagudem, Veerisettigudem, Tammayapalem for their project works. They submitted rough copy of project work under the guidance of Mrs.N.Nagavardhanam, Mrs.B.B.R.G.Vijaya Lakshmi, and Ms.R.Usha Kiran on topics like Mushroom cultivation-a boom to society, Herbal dyes and Organic farming of vegetable crops.
  • II BZC students visited Jeelakarragudem & collected the herbarium on 20th September 2012. More over these trips created interest in the subject & they enjoyed the nature.

2013 – 14

  • Mrs. G. Rani organized a field trip to ‘Pandirimamidigudem and Buttayagudem were organized to Botany students as a part of project work. June 29th 2013
  • Mrs.B.B.R.G. Vijayalakshmi and Miss Sailaja were accompanied II B.Sc HSc and II MPC students for a field trip to Raja Rajeswari ice factory, Satrampadu as a part of Environmental studies field work. October29th 2013.
  • A field trip to ‘Vijayarai, Ramachandrapuram and Rayudupalem were organized to III B.Sc BZC students on 13th November 2013.
  • A field trip to ‘Kondalaraopalem, Vijayarai, Bapirajugudem and was organized to II B.Sc BZC students on27th November 2013.

2014 – 15

  • 26th to 28th July 2014: Botanical tour- Botany faculty organized a botanical tour to III B.Sc BZC students to Visakhapatnam, Borra caves and Araku. This trip enriched the student’s knowledge in nature study and various natural habitats.
  • 20th September department faculty organised a Botanical tour for II BZC students to Rajahmundry, Kalavacherla, Gowtham arboretum, Kadiyam nursaries. The students were enriched with knowledge in Taxonomy and Medicinal botany. They had an opportunity to observe plants in their natural habitat and few advanced agricultural implements such as sower weeder etc. and also few grafting techniques. They also enriched their knowledge regarding Eco-friendly plant products such as plate, cups with bauhinia, banana fiber table mats, bamboo agarbathi sticks, coconut fiber ropes, door mats, brooms etc which were manufactured in kalavacherla, krishivignan kendram. Gowtham arboratum is medicinal plants garden maintained by forest department. By visiting arboratum students upgraded their knowledge in various medicinal plants and their uses. By visiting nursery they acquired knowledge in how to establish and maintain nurseries which will help them in self employment.
  • 15th November 2014: Field trip was organized to I B.Sc BZC students to Kondalaraopalem & Vijayarai.
  • 27th November 2014: Mrs.G.Rani accompanied I BZC students to Pedavegi sericulture unit and mulberry plantation.

2015 - 16

  • 25th August 2015: Field Trip – Botany dept organized field trip to II B.Z.C students to Rajahmundry, gowtham arboretum and Kadiam Nursaries.
  • 10th November 2015: Field trip – Botany dept organized field trip to I B.Z.C students to Bapirajugudem and kondalarao palem.
  • 1st to 5th Feb 2016: Botanical tour to Bangalore, Mysore and Coorg to I, II, III BZC students.


  • 10th and 11th July 2016: Field Trip - A Botanical field trip was organized to Addatheegala, East Godavari district.42 III B.Z.C students were attended and benefited. The students prepared Ayurvedic medicines under the guidance of medical practitioner Mr. Bullayya. They collected and acquired knowledge on many medicinal plants and their uses in medicine preparation.
  • 27th to 29th August 2016: Botanical tour – Botanical tour was organized to Maaredumilli, Rampachodavaram and Addatheegala to II BZC students for collection of Herbarium. 47 students and participated in this tour and collected various varieties of plants under the guidance of Malludora, Babu, Sathyavathi. Students prepared Herbarium under the guidance of Bullayya who is expert in Herbarium preparation.
  • 7th January 2017: Field trip – Botany department organized a field trip to II BZC students to YSR Horticulture University, Venkataramannagudem, Tadepalligudem.
  • 23rd to 26th February 2017: Botanical Tour - Botanical tour was organized to Ooty, Coonor to I BZC students. 26 students were attended.
  • Organic kitchen garden: III B.Sc Botany students established an organic kitchen garden in 2014 behind the arts block under the guidance of Botany faculty. During this year the students cultivated six varieties of leafy vegetable in 6 plots such as Amaranthus, Spinach, Fenugreek, Rumex, Coriandrum, Sorrel and were marketed. In 2015 the III BZC students increased the number of plots to 12. Along with leafy vegetables they also started growing tomato, chillies. In 2016 the III BZC students increased the number of plots to 15. Along with leafy vegetables, tomato, chillies they also started growing brinjal.
  • Herbal garden: Botany department established ‘Susrutha Herbal Garden Unit’ in 2014 June behind the Arts Block. Every year it was upgraded by planting more varieties.
  • Botany week celebrations: Botony Department Faculty Started an innovative programme “Botany week celebrations” in 2015. In this week celebration the department is organizing various competitions such as poster painting, models from waste plant products, dry flower boquet preparation, medicinal plants display, mehendi, vegetable carving, power point presentation etc. to bring out the hidden talents of the students and to create awareness on importance of relationship between nature and Human.
  • Green audit - Along with the photographs the ‘data and importance’ of all the trees present in the campus were tabulated in the book form.
