DEPARTMENT INTRODUCTION

The English Department established at the very inception of the college in 1953 has been the hub of excellence through innovation. The former Principals, the dynamic Sr. Josephine, a visionary and Sr. Winifred, the architect of autonomy belonged to the English Department. One of the stalwarts, Mr. Kondamudi Sri Rama Murthy was an eminent writer who won the state Nandi Award. The former Faculty Mrs. Julia Samuel, Mrs. Pannagi, Mrs. Margaret, Mrs. Tara, Sr. Adelphine, Dr. Aleyamma Mathew Mrs. Rohini Parvathi,Dr.Mrs. V.Rajini, Mrs. Pamela Thomas have contributed their mite to the department. The department with its dynamic faculty has trained students in acquisition of global skills based on the sound bedrock of value orientation and women empowerment and strives relentlessly towards holistic development of the learners. The motto of the Department is Innovation, Excellence and Skill orientation.

  • Dr R. Madhavi has completed two Minor Research Projects.
  • “A Text Book on Communicative English for Vernacular Medium Students” Sponsored by UGC 2009
  • “A Study of the impact of the village Goddess Cult in West Godavari District” 2011- 2013.
  • English department organized a Workshop On 3 rd Sept on “Technology in the class room” Mr. M. Naga Raju was the resource person and Dr. R. Madhavi was Convener. 50 Teachers attended from different schools. 30 students attended from our college.
  • On 15 th July 2016 the Department of English conducted a seminar on phonetics and spoken English for 800 first year students, 1 st and 2 nd M.A students. The resource persons were Smt. P. Naga Suseela, Mr. Gopichand of JKC College Guntur. They used multimedia techniques interactive methods, songs, videos, etc, to conduct the workshop and made it more interesting and innovative. The workshop was conducted under the guidance of the convenor Dr. R Madhavi HOD of English Dept., and members Mrs. Mary Kambam, Dr. D. Fathima Rani, Mrs. Samrajyam, Miss. B Indira & Miss K Beaula Swarupa.
  • Students wrote the Phonetics of vowels, consonant & Diphthong sounds in the workbooks
  • The resource persons made use of videos and songs to teach Phonetics
  • Oral drill, interactive methods were used
  • Dr. R. Madhavi attended an International conference on Innovation, Entrepreneurship & sustainable value chain in a challenging Environment held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 7 th June 2017. This conference was conducted by PRIMAX FOUNDATION Bangalore. Aroud 70 delegates from India, Malaysia attended the conference with resource persons from both the countries. The conference was followed by a trip to Taylor’s university in a guided tour around the university organized by Dean Vinita Guptan and faculty of the university. Presented papers which were published with ISSN number in an International Journal.
  • Guest lecture was organised by the literary Association of the English Language, The guest was Mr. Lorenzo, from Italy who is in India for wraths stay as part of Extension programme.
  • Guest Lecture for II BBA students on the topic “Advertising” The resource persons were from Vijayawada. They used advanced technique of games, role-play, short presentations, advertising techniques etc

  • Dr D. Fathima Rani is recipient of “Adbudaya Woman Award” 2013.
  • Dr D. D. Rajani is recipient of “Best PhD Thesis award by Acharya Nagarjuna University.

International achivements

  • DDr R. Madhavi delivered a Guest Lecture at The University of Texas , Arlington, U.S.A
  • Dr R. Madhavi delivered a training session on Idiomatic English to Students of Bethesda Christian School, Fortworth, U.S.A. in 2016 May .
  • The Department of English conducted an International Seminar on “Dalit Studies-The Challenges of Moving ahead: From Deprival to Dignity” in collaboration with Adikavi Nannaya University, ICSSR, sponsored by UGC.”
  • DProf Mary G race Of Lakehead University , Canada, Mr. Sheila Grace Mary of Edward Islands, Canada Mr Lorenzo of Italy, Prof Cynthia of Canada delivered guest lectures to the English Department
  • Dr Fathima Rani published a book title women as a human- International Publications prestiege books
  • The English department organized a field trip to Rajahmundry on 20th November, 2014.Students who attended – II-B.A- Advanced (14 students) I – B.A-advanced (4 students) III-B.com General (33 students).
  • Students visited The Kadiyam Gardens, River Godavari, The Nirmalagiri Shrine and prepared a Project Report in the form of poems, essays and articles. In 2014—a field visit to Bhavani Islands, Vijayawada was Organised
  • The English Department organized a FIELD TRIP to were Bangalore , Mysore and Coorg from Dec 26 to Dec 31st 2016. to create awareness among students about travel and tourism, to visit places of cultural and historic interest ant d to record the same in Project reports. .
  • A Crash Course in English is conducted every year to create a remedial learning module along with Spoken English through multimedia for 10 days. This is one of the Best Practices of the English Department. Collaboration with Pro Skills Institute , Hyderabad to undertake a Soft Skills and Communication Skills Training in faculty, students on campus and students of state wide Degree colleges is undertaken every year. The department collaborates with “Eezee English” to conduct training in IELTS and Spoken English to students and faculty of colleges and schools of Eluru. Innovative Assignments are offered to Advanced English students such as BOOK/ AUTHOR Review , Preparation of charts, Seminar, movie and book review, preparation of C.D’s and short films. Every year the SPELLING BEE competitions are held in January or February, in which nearly 500 to 600 students participate. The aim of this competition is to train students to improve Vocabulary.
  • The students put up ONEACTPLAYS for different occasions like College Day, Competitions. The PLAY --VILLA FOR SALE – was put up as part of the INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS held under the auspices of SETWELL, Gvt of A.P. Students of all degree courses were auditioned for the roles and 6 actors were shortlisted.
  • The Department trains school Teachers and faculty of colleges and government officials of group II and III cadre in Spoken English, Communicative Language teaching , Accent and Intonation, Use of Technological aids in C.L.T. and E.L.T through organizing and conducting training programmes in collaboration with Spoken English Institutions, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technology, A.P.H.R D.I.,ProSkills Institute, Eezie English Institute etc.
  • The Department is equipped with a Language Laboratory with 60 computers equipped with latest software to train students in Communication Skills and Soft. 40 Teacher and Student Consoles are provided to enable Teacher Student interactive learning. C.L. Packages, L.C.D, audio systems are provided in the Laboratory. The Department also has a Library with 500 books comprising of Journals, Magazines, Prose, Poetry, and Drama anthologies. Around 150 theses of students provide a rich reading experience to Advanced and General English Students.
  • The conduct of programmes by The English Literary Association Masterminds, Conduct of Creative Krafts- preparation of Greeting cards,-students activities, like Wall Magazine’ Pot Pourri,’ , Student seminars,quizzes, competitions are other achievements of the department.
