DEPARTMENT INTRODUCTION

In a technologically growing world theresians should not lag behind in contributing our share towards its progress .One should visualize the future on time , think daringly and turn it into reality through study training ,enterprise and resource in well equipped Department of Physics where in you have the exposure to execute projects. The running strategy is to provide the right mix of skills .It is with vision and foresight the pioneering Principal started the Department of Physics in 1956 under the able leadership of Ms M.V.A. Mangatayaru. She served the department for 37 years. In 1993 Dr.P.Subbalaksmi who joined in 1974 took over the reigns of the department and has successfully run the department for 16 years .During 2003 M.Sc Physics course affiliated to Andhra University was started keeping in view the demand for this discipline having a promising career. Dr. D.K. Durga rendered her committed service to the department upto 2009. Ms.B.Anilakumari who joined the department in 1975 has served the institution. Later on Dr.G.Gowri Devi, who joined the department in 1978, rendered her services as the Head of the department till 2012. At present Dr.A.Nirmala Jyothsna who joined the department in 1987 is the Head of the department of U.G & P.G. Physics.

  • Minor research project completed in 2007-08 on “AC conductivity with temperature variation and its frequency dependence in glass ceramics” by Ms.B.Anila Kumari.
  • U.G.C. Minor Research Project on “Measurement of Ultrasonicvelocity ,Dielectric constant, Spectral Properties in Binary and Ternary Liquids” completed in the Year 2015 by Dr.A.Nirmala Jyothsna .

  • A UGC sponsored National seminar on “Energy conservation-Energy Audit - Energy Efficiency” in coordination with commerce and Home Science departments on 15th and 16th February 2013.

  • A UGC sponsored National Seminar on the topic “Global Trends in Earth’s Climate from Recent Observations” during the period 03-04 February, 2015.
    “Electrical & Electronics Workshop”
  • On 2nd February 2016, a workshop on “Basic Concepts of Spectroscopy” was organized by the department of Physics and Electronics and the resource person was Dr.S.A. Martin Britto Dhas ,Assistant Proffesor, Department of physics, Sacred Heart College , Tirupattur, Vellore. In this workshop he has given a clear idea of the different phenomena of optics like scattering ,Diffraction , Interference, Polarisation&Total internal reflection.
  • Two day workshop was organized by the department of Physics and Electronics for about 120 Electronics students on “PCB Designing and Manufacturing” conducted by Mr.V.Govinda Rao, Director Technical and his team , Microlink ,Vijayawada, . In this the students are trained, to design layout of the circuit ,to print , to connect on PCB board and have integrated the projects “555 Timer” and “Temperature Controlled Fan” .
  • Bhuvan Familiarization Workshop:
  • On 14th November 2016 the Department of Physics and Electronics organized “Bhuvan Familiarization Workshop” in collaboration with National Remote Sensing Centre /ISRO. The resource persons for this workshop are Mr.Vinod M Bothale, Group director, Geo portal & web GIS services NRSC / ISRO and Ms Vijay Banu ,Manager, Bhuvan Technology incubation outreach, RC, NRSC/ISRO.On the occasion of the two institutions coming together to start a collaborative and innovative program using Bhuvan the Center for Innovation &Incubation was inaugurated.

Club Activities : The department is desirous of turning out competent students well versed in the latest information in the subject. training students to face global competitions and provide a platform for students to discuss a number of relevant issues, through the activities of the club, which also include paper presentations, guest lectures, field trips and group discussions. SCOPE(U.G.Physics club) : It stands for Science club of Physics Education, an association of Physics students. In 2008 the Electronics club was merged with Physics club and it is called as ‘Science Club of Physics and Electronics’ SPACE(P.G.Physics club):It stands for “St.Theresa’s Physics Association Center ,Eluru” Knowledge exchange programmes are note worthy practices of our college at the undergraduate level which are appreciated.   • Every year the department faculty have made their ward students sensitive to the needs of the people who were often neglected and have raised some fund towards the “Joy of giving” event.
  • Faculty are consultants to local schools on Physics Concepts through Mobile Lab.
  • Science Awareness programs using Mobile lab were organized for X class students of Juvenile Home for Boys, Sanivarapupeta ,Eluru On 25th September 2014 an awareness programme on “Launching of MOM into orbit of Mars ” was organized by the dept of Physics & Electronics to all the students of P.G and U.G
  • On 5th July 2014 there was a panel discussion on “Cell Tower Radiation and its impact on human life ”and the panel members were Dr.A.Nirmala Jyothsna ,H.O.D.of Physics & Electronics ,Dr.Murali,Radiologist Asram Hospital.
  • Every year as a part of National Science day celebrations EDUFEST is arranged for nearly 800 students of different schools. The department of Physics exhibits the basic principles of Physics in Optics, Sound ,Electricity ,Magnetism,& Electronics through simple experiments and also short films related to Newtons laws, propagation of sound waves, structure of Atom ,Launching of MOM on Mars by ISRO are shown on an LCD projector. Many live electronics projects like Lie detector ,Nerve tester, Clap Switch, Antisleep alarm ,Electronic Eye etc are demonstrated. The posters on recent developments in various fields of Science and Technology were displayed. It was a real source of inspiration for the young minds.
  • On 15th February an awareness session on ISRO's activities was given with the help of videos . After this all our students (nearly 2000) and faculty have watched enthusiastically live forecast of launch of 104 satellites with PSLV C-37 .
  • Dr.A.Nirmala Jyothsna was the Jury member for the District level INSPIRE awards Science Exhibition from 8th September 2015 to 10th September 2015 held at St.Xavier’s High school, Xavier nagar, Eluru, W.G.Dt., organized by DST, Govt. of India, New Delhi.
  • On 18th December ,2015 a national Seminar on “Applications of Differential Equations ” was organised by the dept of Mathematics in which Dr.A.Nirmala Jyothsna was a resource person for one of the session of the seminar and enlightened the students on “Differential Equations - A realistic Approach ”.
  • A Post graduate student Dr.Ujwala ,Dept of Prosthodontics ,St.Josephs Dental college utilizes the expertise and equipment of Physics lab to complete her thesis

Best Practices: Remedial Teaching:
  • The main objective of REMEDIAL TEACHING is identifying slow learners and giving them the necessary guidance to help them overcome their problems, after identifying their areas of difficulty
  • Every year from 15th to 21st December 2014 “Energy conservation week” was celebrated by the department of Physics in collaboration with the NREDCAP and various competitions like Essay Writing ,PPT ,Poster presentation related to energy conservation were conducted. Exhibition of Solar Equipment is conducted .
  • National Graduate Physics Examination is conducted every year for B.Sc Students in association with Indian Association Physics Teachers.
  • The department celebrates prominent days related to Physics field.
International Year of Light Celebration:
  • As UNO announced 2015 as International year of light, the department of Physics & Electronics has taken up these celebrations . The Chief Guest Dr.B.Prasada Rao I.P.S., Home Secretary, Govt.of A.P. delivered his keynote address on “Studies on wave particle duality of light”.
  • The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) aims to raise global awareness of the social, economic and developmental role of light and optical technologies. As UNO announced this year being International year of light, the department of Physics & Electronics has taken up these celebrations and has conducted the following programs as a part of the celebration.
  • Essay Writing Competition
  • Power Point Presentation competition
  • Physics and Electronics Exhibition was organized by the department for Intermediate students on November 4th , 2015 in which all the experiments of physics & Electronics at intermediate level were demonstrated and displayed. Students from various colleges in and around Eluru have actively participated and acquired knowledge on different principles of Physics & Electronics .

  • On 14th December 2015, students of III B.Sc M.E.C & II B.Sc M.E.C went to National Level Competition of Electronics organised by the dept of Electronics , Andhra Loyola College , Vijayawada Ms.Neelima of II B.Sc M.E.C bagged First prize in power point presentation competition in which she presented a paper on “Skinput Technologies”

P.G.Physics :
  • Ms.K.Kanakamaha Lakshmi stood First in M.Sc Physics at Andhra University level for the academic year 2004-2006 and got 3 Gold Medals & 8 Cash awards.
  • Ms.Sk.Razia Sultana Begum stood First in M.Sc Physics at Andhra University level for 2009-11 batch and got 3 Gold Medals & 8 Cash awards.
  • Ms.K.Harshitha of II B.Sc Physics has secured Ist prize in competition of oral presentations on “Contribution Of Sir C.V.Raman to Science ” conducted at S.C.I.M. Degree College , Tanuku .
  • Ms.Y.Vishnu Teja won a cash award of Rs.10,000 from Jayanthi ganganna trust for merit in Physics during the acedamic year 2013-15.
