DEPARTMENT INTRODUCTION

The starting of Biology course in our college dates as back as 1958 with 16 students on rolls, Dr. Adilakshmi was the first head of the department in 1960. After the Biology department was bifurcated into Botany and Zoology departments, Mrs. Chandraprabha and Adilakshmi were heads of the department respectively.

Mrs. R. Swarajya Lakshmi : In 1961, she became the Head of the Department. Since its inception, the department has striven to create zeal for the animal world among learners, keeping in view the significance of the subject and its relevance in higher education and the job market, the Department has been updating its curriculum on a continuous basis to include topics that are need based and of significance.

Dr. Marietta Pudota, former Principal, faculty of Zoology - Received State Best Teacher Award, Bharat Jyothi Award at National level.

Dr.V.V.Padmavathi - Cuuriculum upgradation and expansion of infrastructure of the department.

Dr.J.Satyavathi Fraser – Promoted student centered activities like assignments with power point presentations, essay writing and elocution competitions etc., and organized 1 National Seminar and 2 workshops..

Dr. R.Indira, organized 2 National Seminars and 3 Workshops, completed 2 MRPs, received Young Scientist Award from ANU in 2006 and W.G.Dt. level Best performance Award-2013 and 2014, Best Teacher in Zoology from CCE, A.P, Hyderabad. Equipped the department with latest technologies like Virtual Labs. All the members are actively involved in various research activities. There are five Ph.D s and four M.Phils in department.

The department has association with a number of local Government bodies like District Animal Welfare Society, Animal Husbandry department, APPCB, Dept. of Sericulture, State fisheries department, Forest department, DM&HO, Hospitals like Dist HQ Hospital, ASRAM Hospital, Venus Aqua lab, Deepak Nexgen Feed Company and many other organizations, undertakes many community Extension programmes, project works, Knowledge extension programmes with the Head of the Department coordinating many activities that are multidimensional in quality and skill oriented.

  • ES Students visited various industries at Industrial Estate to study pollution rate caused by industries.
  • • 2012-2013: On 7th January 2013, a field trip was arranged by the department for III B.Sc Students to Govt. Fish Hatcheries, Badampudi. Sr.Krishna Rao garu explained about the activities undertaken by the department.
  • • 2013-2014:17th & 25th July: a field trip was arranged by the department for II Bsc Students to Mani singh Emu farm, Palagudem, Kalaparru.
  • -8th Jan 2014: A field Trip was arranged for I B.Sc students to Sericulture Units, Vegiwada. They also studied Poultry farms in Vegiwada
  • • 2014-15: 20th August 2014: II BZC and ZNC students visited Manisingh Emu farm, Palagudem to have practical orientation under study trip and Mr. Hari Kiran, owner of Emu farm explained the challenges and importance of emu farming.
  • 27th November 2014: I BZC and ZNC students visited Sericulture units at Vegivada and Poultry farms to have practical orientation under study trip and Mrs. explained the sericulture management.
  • On 21-8-2015 III BSC BZC, ZNC, II BVOC CALT , I BVOC students along with faculty taken to field trip to government fish hatchery, Badampudi. There, the students have studied Jar hatchery, circulation hatchery, Breeding and hatchery hapas, Induced breeding. Mr. Steven Roy, FDO explained the equipment and induced breeding technique and management in aqua farms in detail.
  • Clinical and Aqua Lab Technology students along with faculty taken to field trip to Fish culture ponds in Manuru & Devi chintapadu. The students were benefited by the practical skills, experience given by the fish farmers in the management of aqua farms and harvesting techniques.
  • 11-6-15- “Adolescent and youth problems” by Dr. K. Chandra Sekhar, professor, ASRAM Medical college, Eluru. He gave motivation on the importance of health check up to the students.
  • A Health camp organized in the campus by the Dept. of Zoology in association with ASRAM Hospital for all the students and faculty. 10 Doctors and 20 technicians came and gave their services in the fields like Dental, Ophthalmology, ENT and general Medicine and also conducted diagnostic tests like blood grouping, Hb ,B.P, Height & weight for all the participants. About 800 students and staff participate and avail medical service. This is for the project work of final year students and also the screeing for STARS programme. (St.Theresa’s Arogya Rakshita Scheme).
  • On 31-8-15, a Guest Lecture was given by Dr. G. Srinivas, professor, General Physician, ASRAM medical college, Eluru on the topic “Anaemia” to all the students to gave awareness and to take necessary steps to control Anaemia.
  • 2014-15: 20th August 2014: II BZC and ZNC students visited Manisingh Emu farm, Palagudem to have practical orientation under study trip and Mr. Hari Kiran, owner of Emu farm explained the challenges and importance of emu farming.
  • 20-8-2015- Anaemia eradication programme under STARS launched by the Dept of Zoology. Sr.Principal gave iron medicines & devorming tablets (Albendazole) to 77 anaemic students.   • 7-7-16- “Preventive Strategies of Diabetes ” by Dr. K. Chandra Sekhar, professor, ASRAM Medical college, Eluru.
  • Mega Health camp conducted in association with the ASRAM hospital for all students, f aculty, supporting staff of our college. 15 doctors and 15 technicians came from General Medicine, Ophthamology, ENT, Dermatology, Gynecology,Dental etc.

  • 5-11-2014: Eco club members (staff and students) organized an inaugural programme and launched 5 pairs of Separate two coloured dust bins and the students kept near different blocks.
  • All the members of Eco club went to Kattasubbara thota and sri Ram Nagar cheruvugattu , an adapted area of this academic year. students planted 25 saplings, poured vermicomposting and watered them
  • Students are cleaning the premises of Vermicompost unit every week and also watering the compost ones in every 3 days.

  • Eco club: Vanam Manam programme:29-7-2016: Vanam Manam Programme: Dr.Sr.Mercy ,principal, Mrs.Bhrameswari madam, Eco club staff members and student members participated and planted few plants in the campus infront of Asha kiranam. In that Programme, the students depicted different types of cultures like sericulture, vermiculture, pearl culture etc and their careers opportunities for biology students with the display of their products and power point presentation.
